Kelly's Books to Go and/or Print: A Bookstore

"I was very satisfied with hosting Kalee Gwarjanski in honor of her debut picture book, Miss MacDonald Has a Farm. In the lead-up to the program, Kalee was very responsive via email. Kalee arrived early and was set up and ready to go ahead of our start time. I also appreciated Kalee supplying her own bookseller—that makes it a lot easier for me, not worrying about the books at all.

Kalee read her story energetically, keeping the children engaged. They loved putting flannel pieces of vegetables on the board (and I did too!). We supplemented the program with some Laurie Berkner songs to dance to, which was a lot of fun. Afterward, we colored some pictures that were supplied by Kalee, and kids seemed to really enjoy it, telling me all about their favorite vegetables. I would recommend Kalee’s program to other librarians, especially those interested in gardening and the local food movement."

Writing

Twisting A Classic

This creative writing class will study picture books that have taken a classic story and twisted it into something new. We will dive deep into multiple examples to study how to do it. Then with writing prompts we will work in the moment to try out your own ideas. This class can be modified for any age. Probably best suited for 6th grade to adults.

Girl Reading a Book

Find the Refrain

Picture books are meant to be read aloud and a refrain can be an earworm inviting readers to want to read it again and again. In this workshop, we will study multiple picture book examples, diving down deep to the word level to examine why they are effective. Then there will be guided time to brainstorm and work on a refrain to incorporate into your current WIP.  As time allows, there will be opportunities for sharing and feedback.
